In 2018, I opened a solo provider practice focused on assessment, diagnosis, and medication management for mental health patients ranging from ages 4 to 65. Initially, I established the practice in Texas, providing comprehensive mental health services to the local community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned the practice to a tele-psychiatry-only model, which proved to be more convenient and accessible for my patients. As the practice grew and I gained experience, I expanded my services to Colorado, allowing me to reach a broader patient population across both states. The ability to provide care remotely enabled me to serve individuals in need across a wider geographic area, offering professional assessment, diagnosis, and medication management services from the comfort and safety of their own homes. This shift to tele-psychiatry has been instrumental in ensuring continuity of care and expanding the reach of my practice during these challenging times.

My time in the Navy Nurse Corps was deeply rewarding. I had the privilege of caring for active duty service members as well as their family members, which allowed me to gain a wealth of diverse clinical experience. Beginning my nursing career as the officer in charge of three psychiatric units, managing a team of six corpsmen, was an immense challenge that also facilitated tremendous personal and professional growth. I navigated the complexities of mental health care, honing my skills as a well-rounded nurse. Later, I transitioned to the post-op surgery floor and oncology units, further broadening my expertise. I even had the opportunity to briefly engage in nursing research before ultimately resigning my commission to continue advancing my nursing career in the civilian sector.

Providing infusions to patients in their homes was a rewarding aspect of my nursing career. These visits often lasted for hours, giving me the chance to learn about my patients' personal struggles, including discussions about their mental health. This experience deepened my understanding of the holistic needs of my patients and the importance of addressing both physical and mental well-being. By spending time with these individuals in their homes, I gained valuable insights into their daily realities, from managing chronic conditions to coping with depression and anxiety. This personalized approach allowed me to develop a more comprehensive understanding of my patients' needs, reinforcing the importance of addressing the whole person. These home visits were instrumental in shaping my nursing philosophy and commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centered care.

As the back-office RN for a solo physician specializing in thyroid disease, I found myself in a unique and rewarding role. My primary responsibilities included managing the flow of patients and working with a single medical assistant. However, one of the most significant aspects of my role was the time I spent talking with patients. Many of the individuals seeking care at this specialized clinic were dealing with thyroid-related issues, including thyroid cancer, and mental health concerns often emerged as a significant factor in their overall well-being. I was able to foster open conversations about the emotional and mental health aspects of their conditions. I educated patients on the connection between thyroid function and mood. This holistic approach had a profound impact on the patients, and I witnessed firsthand the importance of addressing the mental health needs of those dealing with chronic or complex medical conditions.

Clinical Case Manager

Worked as an RN in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. Our primary responsibilities involved providing comprehensive, compassionate care to patients experiencing acute mental health crises or exacerbations of chronic psychiatric conditions. Educated patients and their families about mental health conditions and available resources. Working in this fast-paced, emotionally demanding setting requires a deep well of empathy, resilience, and clinical expertise. The opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of patients was rewarding.
